The Mess
One of the questions that often comes up at Living History events is ……. “Did you sleep here, what do you eat, is that a real fire?” Well, yes we sleep and eat at the encampment and so do our horses! Most War Horses are trained to eat from grain bags (period correct) and they are tied to lead lines with quick release knots that attach them to a picket line tied between two trees. This image was taken in North Carolina and it was the first battle for our War Horse in training, Rondy, on the right.
It is amazing to note that the best way to train a War Horse is to bring them into the field, encampment with a small herd of experienced War Horses. “The Mess” is a military term referring to the kitchen/dining hall and as you can see in this familiar reenactment image, Jack (left) and Rondy(right) have settled in with their breakfast and encamp within close quarters with their humans. During actual time of war, horses would often carry their meals in bags and then live off the land as a campaign evolved.
